TEFAF Talks - The Thrill of the Chase: From Discovery to Acquisition

At TEFAF Maastricht 2025, the Musée du Louvre acquired Betty Josefine Jacobine Bloem und Friderike Luisa Bloem by Johann Richard Seel from Gallery 19C, while the Germanisches Nationalmuseum secured the Newbattle Abbey Casket from Georg Laue. These recent acquisitions offer a glimpse into decision-making that defines institutional collecting today. 

The panel explores how  museums identify, evaluate, and ultimately secure exceptional artworks. Drawing on recent  acquisitions, the discussion will reflect on connoisseurship and the interdependent roles of dealers, curators, museum directors, and art fairs in shaping institutional collections.
